Using a Borescope Around the Home and Garage: A Beginner’s Guide

Borescopes are the industrial cousins of medical endoscopes. Instead of looking inside the body, they let you see inside engines, walls, pipes and machinery without taking anything apart. Affordable models that connect to a phone or have their own screen have put this technology within reach of anyone with a toolbox.

What a borescope actually is

At its simplest, a borescope is a small camera with built-in LED lights at the end of a long probe. The probe can be rigid, semi-rigid (bendable and holds its shape) or fully flexible. More advanced models have an articulating tip that you steer with a control on the handle, letting you look around corners.

Practical uses at home

  • Car engines: inspect cylinders through the spark plug hole for carbon build-up or scoring.
  • Walls and ceilings: check for damp, pests or hidden cables before drilling.
  • Drains and pipes: locate blockages or damaged sections.
  • Appliances: find lost items or loose parts inside washing machines and air ducts.
  • Lost objects: retrieve keys or jewellery from tight gaps with a hook attachment.

Choosing the right model

Probe diameter matters most. A thin probe of around 5 to 6 mm fits through spark plug holes and small gaps, while a wider probe often gives a better image. Look for adjustable LED brightness, a waterproof probe if you will inspect pipes, and a cable length suited to your jobs. A semi-rigid cable is easiest for beginners because it goes where you point it.

Tips for clear images

Turn the lights down a little if surfaces look washed out; shiny metal reflects heavily. Move slowly, since small movements at the handle become big jumps on screen. Clean the lens before and after each use, and record video so you can review what you saw later.

A tool that shares your phone

Many hobby borescopes use a smartphone as the display, which means the same device runs your inspection app and everything else. After an evening in the garage, some people unwind with music, a podcast or a few mobile slot games. If you are an adult who enjoys the latter, set a spending cap first and treat it purely as a pastime. Just unplug the probe before you put your feet up.
